DIDACTIC GUIDE and SUMMARIES.

INTRODUCTION

As the show deals with monsters, scary tales and terrific places it could be a good idea to get the children ready for the experience pre-teaching them some vocabulary they will hear, while playing Halloween games and doing activities related to the songs of the concert. We would like to offer you a didactic guide you can use in an one hour class, which we are sure can make the experience more memorable and enjoyable.

However, if you don’t have the time to prepare and extra lesson or you don’t feel it could fit your classes, we strongly recommend you read the summaries of the songs with your students before going to the show. The summaries have questions to help them predict what could happen next and answering the questions with your class is a great way to prepare for the performance! Even if you do the extra class, it is still advisable you read together the summaries.

DIDACTIC GUIDE

1. Setting the scene.

If you can do it, why don’t you decorate the class? You can put around the class several copies of the flashcard we provide of a tombstone and skeleton (FLASHCARD 1) and of the monsters flashcards (FLASHCARDS 1-10) and you can use ordinary Halloween decorations, too. These props can certainly be a great way to introduce vocabulary and get your students excited.

Also, you can write on the board these verses from one of the songs:

Bones all around me, eeh, eeh, eeh,

Tombstones all around you, ooh, ooh, ooh,

Bones and tombstones, oo-hoo hoo hoo hoo”

Tell them they come from the play they are going to watch them and ask them what kind of play could it be (a comedy, traditional tales or scary stories)

2. A haunted house.

Show your students this flashcard

Ask them what they can see (It’s a haunted house) Tell them they are going to hear noises from this house and they have to tell you what they are. Write on the board the list of things they will hear and tell them to write them in the order they listen to them.

LIST OF THINGS:

  1. A door.

  2. Footsteps.

  3. A witch laughing.

  4. A skeleton dancing.

  5. A cat.

  6. A clock

  7. A dog barking

  8. Screams

  9. Chains

Finally, you could tell them that being able to predict information from the context like they have done could be a great way to understand the songs during the play.

3. A VERY SCARY RECIPE.

Read with your students the summary of the story : “Delicious Visitors”

When the students arrive to the castle, everything looks so well. The band starts to play, the show is about to begin, and the chef is preparing a very special dinner.

Tell your students they are going to create a dish for this restaurant. You will give them a list of ingredients (they can add more) and they have to create a dish choosing some ingredients. Encourage them to name the dishes in an imaginative way! You could vote for the most revolting dish!

Ingredients:

Termites and moths

Spiderwebs and moss

Rats

Rotten eggs

Special sauce made with worms

Pirate glass eye

Dirty water where your dog washed his feet

Example of dish:

4. TRICK OR TREAT.

To finish the class, play trick or treat.

Trick or Treat

Give each student a turn to be a trick-or-treater. Tell the student to go outside the classroom door. Out in the hallway, give your student a monster flashcard. (FROM the HALLOWEEN CUSTOME FLASH PDF) The student should close the door and yell trick-or-treat! Allow one student to answer the door. The student who answers the door has to guess which flashcard the other person has. He can ask three yes/no questions before taking a guess. If he can’t guess, another student can come to the door and ask three more questions.
